A latte is an espresso-based coffee made with a large amount of steamed milk and a light layer of foam. It’s known for its smooth, creamy texture and mild coffee flavor.
Origin
The latte originated in Italy as caffè latte, meaning “coffee with milk.” While Italians typically drink it at home, the modern café-style latte became popular internationally as espresso culture spread.
How it’s made
- One (or two) shots of espresso are brewed
- Milk is steamed with minimal foam
- Steamed milk is poured over the espresso
- A thin layer of foam rests on top
Typical ratio: approximately 1:3 to 1:5 (espresso : steamed milk)
Typical size: usually served in a larger cup or glass (240–360 ml)
Taste profile
- Very smooth and creamy
- Mild espresso flavor
- Low bitterness
- Naturally sweet from steamed milk
Variations
- Iced latte – espresso with cold milk and ice
- Flavored latte – vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, etc.
- Milk alternatives – oat, soy, almond, or coconut milk
- Latte macchiato – milk “stained” with espresso (layered appearance)
- Extra shot latte – stronger espresso flavor
Serving
Typically served hot, often in a wide cup or tall glass. Commonly features latte art due to the smooth milk texture.
